Yields on 10-year government bonds may fall to 1 percent by the end of March and credit-default swaps on Japanese banks may rise if the nation’s stock market rally falters, according to Matsuzawa. The Nikkei 225 Stock Average has risen 18.5 percent this year.
“Our banking system is not as directly hurt as in the U.S. and Europe, and the only big exposure banks have here is to stock markets,” Matsuzawa said. “The movement of equities is key for their credit-default swaps.”
Bank Risk
Contracts protecting the debt of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc., Japan’s biggest lender by market value, have fallen to 71.4 basis points from 235 basis points on March 12, CMA DataVision prices show. Standard & Poor’s affirmed its credit and bank fundamental strength ratings on Japan’s six major lenders on Aug. 28, reflecting stress test results for the quarter to June 30.
