Treasury Yield Curve Flattens | Seeking Alpha

The difference between the 10-year and 2-year Treasury rates narrowed to 47 basis points on Monday (April 16) - the smallest gap since late 2007. The last time this widely followed spread was this close to zero, the US economy was close to a recession. Is this indicator flashing a similar warning today?

No, according to a broad reading of the economic data, which reflects a healthy trend. The question is whether the narrowing yield spread is still a reliable late-cycle warning that the macro profile will weaken in the months ahead.

Recent comments by Federal Reserve officials have cast doubt on the validity of the yield curve's credentials for predicting a new recession. Last month, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said that the historically reliable record of yield curve warnings for the economy no longer applies.

The arguments in favor of shelving the yield curve's warning this time around include the explanation that an extraordinary level of foreign demand is depressing the 10-year yield, and so, the dependability of the signal for the US economy has been compromised for business-cycle analysis. The opposing view is that the crowd always claims that "this time it's different" during late-cycle yield curve warnings.

What is the OIS LIBOR Spread And What Is It For? | Investopedia )

non siamo ancora, secondo me, all'allarme rosso, ma poco ci manca

- an increase in short-term bond (T-bill) issuance
- rising outflow pressures on dollar deposits in the US owing to rising short-term rates
- repatriation to cope with US Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) and new trade policies, and concerns on dollar liquidity outside the US
- risk premium for uncertainty of US monetary policy
- recently elevated credit spreads (CDS) of banks ( NB qui si rovescia il rapporto causa effetto...)
- demand for funds in preparation for market stress

The Flattening Of The Yield Curve: It May Not Be What You Think | Seeking Alpha

Large amounts of risk averse money that had earlier come to the United States Treasury market earlier in the economic recovery was now leaving the United States as a result of the election of Donald Trump as president.

This flow of money had resulted in a distortion of US Treasury yields, especially the yields related to Treasury Inflation Protected Securities (TIPS). The term structure of the yield curve is flattening for TIPS.

The flattening in the Treasury yield curve has come almost entirely in TIPS. The reason is that the risk-averse lenders putting their money in the US put most of the money into the shorter maturity inflation protected securities. This is why the five-year yield went negative sooner than did the ten-year yield.

There has been a slight rise in inflationary expectations. The interesting thing is that inflation is expected to be a little higher - about 5 basis points or so - in the next five years than over the next decade. So, the changes in inflationary expectations have contributed a little to the flattening of the yield curve.

Salve a tutti

The Yield Curve's Round Trip | Seeking Alpha

From the FOMC's December 2017 minutes: "Among the factors contributing to the flattening, participants pointed to recent increases in the target range for the federal funds rate, reductions in investors' estimates of the longer-run neutral real interest rate, lower longer-term inflation expectations, and lower term premiums. They generally agreed that the current degree of flatness of the yield curve was not unusual by historical standards".
