The Ambac Financial Group, the troubled bond insurance company, said in a regulatory filing on Monday that it was in talks with creditors about filing a bankruptcy plan that would help the firm reorganize its huge debt load.
Ambac, which said it had $1.6 billion in debt as of June 30, said it was in talks about filing a prepackaged bankruptcy, a speedier route that has the backing of a majority of creditors, by the end of the year.
The precipitating event is Ambac’s decision not to pay interest on a series of bonds due on Monday. Failure to pay the interest on the bonds, which mature on May 1, 2023, and carry a 7.5 percent interest rate, within 30 days would allow creditors to accelerate the maturity of the debt.
Ambac had been trying to raise capital as an alternative to filing for bankruptcy.
