=== Do you still have a PC running an older version of Windows? | WinClassic
anixx on Sept 12, 2016 3:26:26 GMT -8
The problem is that the newer versions of Windows are not incremental improvements and get a lot of features scrapped or broken.
Also the quality degraded significantly.
People who work at Microsoft tell that their internal atmosphere had changed significantly since Bill Gates resigned.

I do agree that Windows seems to get worse with every new version.
I mean there have certainly been some improvements, but overall there's a lot to be desired, especially in comparison to older versions.
Microsoft is not the same company it used to be, that's for sure.
But hey, we're still finding ways to make Windows better here, so it's not all bad.

I have 2 PC's.
My main one has Windows 7, which I will NEVER update.
My second one is Win XP because I love it and still use it to run older music software.
I have a KVM switch so I can go between them quite easily.
My work computer has Win 10 which I HATE.

=== Windows 10 redesign will ruin the classic theme????? | WinClassic

There is a lot of news of a Windows 10 redesign with almost everything being fluent design, but this could ruin the classic theme in Windows 10 making it unusable.

I wonder why Microsoft always makes computers look like telephones. My computer is not a phone neither a tablet.

Nadella once said that the desktop market was dying and everyone will use pads instead in the future.
He said Microsoft should learn from Apple who mostly re-based their business towards mobile devices. He is a big fan of Jobs.

(mini-rant) Ok, this is the upper limit. I really wish Bill (and Steve to an extent, due to me also using linux) didn't leave MS. They would have made a much better Windows.
Nadella's vision for Windows is super flawed, and so is metro/""UWP"".
I hate touchscreen elements on a non-touchscreen display and I will still be using a mouse and keyboard even on "pads" (it's just easier to use that way).
Unless if Microsoft makes seperate OSes for Laptops/Desktops and Tablets just like Apple did with iOS and MacOS (iOS and MacOS are based on the same kernel, so why can't M$ base a separate mobile OS on NT?) in the next year or so, I will be installing LTSB 2015 and will not be dealing with modern Windows 10 anymore, and also using Linux more.

Honestly I feel you. My PC isn't a phone nor tablet. Heck even in 8.1 it was easy to get replacements and turn off updates (IIRC).

I think they will start with the apps that non-powerusers use.
The management console might not even be touched at all, it was just a prediction.

It'll be a long time coming. The real problem is what they'll break as time goes by IMO.
R.O.B. on Nov 10, 2020 18:03:53 GMT -8
This is pretty much the biggest issue. Windows is a huge, tangled mess of decades worth of code, and I think Microsoft would have a very difficult time completely removing the classic theme because of this (especially since MS has to worry about things like software compatibility).
However, OS features are only going to continue to break with it, and 21H1 (or whatever version they're planning on pushing this with) could very well be the killing **** that many of us have been expecting for a while now.
We're just going to have to wait and see what ends up happening. But given our past experience with things like this, I'm really not optimistic at all. At this point, I'm honestly just more curious to see how broken it's going to be than I am hopeful that it won't be broken.
ihatemetro on Nov 10, 2020 18:32:32 GMT -8
I agree. I can't wait to see what M$ will do with poor old Windows and mangle it worse than Windows 8 (not 8.1) or Windows 10 1909.

I remember those good old days where we were waiting for a new version of Windows to see what got improved there, not broken.

Same. Ah yes, themes were revolutionary, and so was aero/DWM. I miss those days.
