E. Savitz, Forbes Staff

Cirrus Logic shares have extended their rally into the after-hours session following the company’s fiscal Q4 financial release, thanks in large part to a highly bullish (if not that specific) outlook for FY 2013.

For the quarter, the company reported revenue of $110.6 million and non-GAAP profits of 36 cents a share, ahead of the Street at $110.1 million and 34 cents.

For Q1, Cirrus actually provided slightly disappointing guidance. The company is expecting revenue of $96 million to $106 million, below the Street at $106.6 million. But Cirrus said it expects growth to accelerate later this year – and announced that to support that growth it has signed a new one-year $100 million unsecured credit agreement.

“Due to the timing of various product introductions later this year, the company expects to transition to a sharply higher level of revenue beginning in the September quarter,” Cirrus said. (Anyone smell an iPhone here? Just askin’.) The company said the new credit pact “provides access to additional working capital the company may need in order to support the production ramps of multiple new products this fall.”

CRUS in late trading is up $1.86, or 8.1%, to $24.95. That follows a gain of $2.29, or 11%, in the regular session, in a move spurred by last night’s report that Apple sold a higher-than-expected number of iPhones in the March quarter.

.....
Several semiconductor companies had strong performances over the past year. Cirrus Logic (Nasdaq: CRUS ) , for example, jumped 68%. With more than 1,000 patents serving more than 700 products, it's a compelling proposition. It doesn't hurt that it's supplying audio chips to Apple, among other customers.

Other companies didn't do as well last year, but could see their fortunes change in the coming years. InterDigital (Nasdaq: IDCC ) , down 40%, also holds a lot of patents, and has some investors frustrated that it's not making the most of them. The stock had risen last year on speculation that it might get bought out, but that didn't happen.

NVIDIA (Nasdaq: NVDA ) , down 35%, is facing a bit of a chip shortage, among other challenges. Its advocates have been calling 2012 the year of the quad-core mobile processor, but Apple's latest iPad didn't embrace quad-core technology as much as some expected, deflating some NVIDIA-related expectations.

Then there's Applied Materials (Nasdaq: AMAT ) , down 21%. It's generating a lot of free cash flow, is buying back many of its shares, has hiked its dividend by 13% (so that it was recently yielding 3%), and recently reported record revenue. The company bought Varian Semiconductor last year, and is poised to benefit as the global economy recovers the mobile computing revolution continues, requiring lots of chips.

The big picture
Demand for semiconductors isn't going away anytime soon. ....
