Novatel Wireless Announces New Orders for Over $7 Million of Market Leading Merlin UMTS PC Card
Tuesday, May 18, 2004 08:15 AM ET Printer-friendly version

New UMTS PC Card in Development for North America
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 18, 2004--Novatel Wireless, Inc. (Nasdaq: NVTL, news), a leading provider of wireless broadband access solutions, today announced the receipt of over $7 million in new orders from existing customers for Merlin U530™ Wireless PC Card Modems. These orders are all scheduled for delivery in 2004. Additionally, Novatel Wireless today announced the development for trial of a Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) wireless PC Card modem for the 1900 MHz band in North America.

To date, seven operators -- Hutchinson's 3, E-Plus, O2, Telecom Italia Mobile, Telefonica Moviles Espana, and T-Mobile -- have announced selection of the Merlin U530™ to support the commercial roll-out of high speed data services on 3G UMTS networks in Australia, Austria, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Shipments of the Merlin U530 began in late December and to date, Novatel Wireless has received orders totaling over $57 million.

The market leading Merlin U530, jointly developed with Lucent Technologies, is a high speed wide area PC Card for laptops designed to enable mobile users to access email, the Internet and corporate databases over Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM), General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks in Asia, Australia and Europe.

By inserting the Merlin U530 into a laptop computer and installing the accompanying modem manager software, subscribers on 3G UMTS networks in Asia, Australia and Europe will be able to stream audio and video content, send and receive email, browse the Internet, and download large attachments such as photos, presentations, and spreadsheets at speeds of up to 384 kilobits per second. Compatible with virtual private networks (VPN), the Merlin U530 enables secure wireless access to important corporate applications and files stored behind firewalls. The combined solution allows business professionals to access crucial information, stay in touch with clients and remain productive while away from the office, ultimately providing them with a critical competitive advantage.

"We believe these new orders offer evidence of increasing demand and an expanding market for our UMTS products," said Peter Leparulo, chief executive officer of Novatel Wireless. "In addition, we are excited about our new UMTS development effort which will further expand our broadband offerings to address the needs of mobile operators in North America."

SG Cowen initiates Novatel Wireless (NVTL 16.74 +0.94) as revenue growth is about to hit a major inflection point. The firm estimates revs will grow at a 113% CAGR from 03-05 as multiple customers in Europe and the US roll out 3G high-speed data services. The firm believes that Novatel is currently the only PC-card vendor with a product available for both of the mass-market 3G technologies (EV-DO and WCDMA). The firm believes the stock can trade at a premium to its peer group average, which is reasonable for a co with high growth prospects, a lead on the competition and increasing returns on capital. Upcoming catalysts include potential new customer announcements, early indications of success from European 3G operators and Verizon's rollout of its 3G network in 2H:04

Lucent Technologies and Novatel Wireless to Supply Telecom Italia Mobile With UMTS PC Cards to Support 3G High-Speed Data Services
CANNES, France, Feb. 23 -- Lucent Technologies LU and Novatel Wireless, Inc. NVTL today announced that they will provide Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) with their jointly developed third-generation (3G) Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) PC modem cards.

These cards will enable TIM to offer enhanced high-speed mobile data services on the operator's 3G UMTS network in Italy, and also support connections on existing GPRS infrastructure. Targeted primarily at enterprise users, these cards will enable high-quality data connections, mobile access to e-mail with large attachments -- and other information stored behind corporate firewalls -- at data transmission speeds of up to 384 kilobits per second.

In addition to the Merlin U530™ cards, Lucent and Novatel Wireless will supply TIM with the system software and services needed to support the commercial rollout of service to TIM's customers. Lucent Worldwide Services also will be providing installation and maintenance support for the commercial roll out.

By plugging the PC cards into a laptop and installing the necessary client software, end-users will be able to access TIM's UMTS network.

"TIM is one of the key European market leaders committed to the introduction of advanced wireless services," said David Poticny, president, Lucent Technologies Europe. "We are proud to support TIM in their effort to provide customers with 3G high-speed-data and multimedia services. The agreement signed by Lucent Technologies and TIM follows Lucent's joint UMTS pilot networks deployments with operators in Europe that have demonstrated the readiness of Lucent's UMTS offer and the benefits of 3G mobile high-speed data services for end users.

"Enterprises involved in the trials have said this technology increases employee productivity outside of the office and face-to-face time with customers," Poticny added.

Lucent and Novatel Wireless are demonstrating 3G UMTS services using the Merlin U530 cards and Lucent's end-to-end UMTS infrastructure in Lucent's booth (Booth A16, Hall 1) at the 3GSM World Congress 2004, taking place from Feb. 23 - 26 at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France.

CINGULAR WIRELESS SELECTS LUCENT TECHNOLOGIES FOR 3G UMTS TRIAL NETWORK IN ATLANTA

Network to Support Voice, High-Speed Data and Multimedia Services; Trial Includes Testing of HSDPA

FOR RELEASE: WEDNESDAY, MAY 26, 2004

ATLANTA, GA and MURRAY HILL, NJ - Cingular Wireless and Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) announced today that Lucent has been selected to deploy a third-generation (3G) UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) trial network in the Atlanta market. The trial, which will be supporting internal users this summer, will allow Cingular to evaluate mobile voice, high-speed data and multimedia services.

The UMTS network will operate in Cingular Wireless' 1900 MHz spectrum, and will include testing of High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), a technology that will ultimately support data speeds of up to 14.4 Megabits per second (Mbps). The network also will be designed to support voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) services in the future.

With this network, Cingular Wireless will be able to provide services such as high-speed downloads of film trailers, and video clips of sporting and entertainment events; mobile access to e-mail (including large attachments); and the ability to locate nearby services such as ATMs, restaurants or movie theaters.

Additionally, this network deployment will allow Cingular to demonstrate technology that will enable businesses to provide their employees -- such as field service and sales personnel -- with high-speed mobile access to their corporate networks and all the business applications they normally use in the office.

"This trial offers us an ideal opportunity to evaluate the capabilities and range of services that we can offer to our customers using UMTS and HSDPA technology, and overcome technical challenges before pursuing broader deployments," said Kris Rinne, Acting Chief Technical Officer of Cingular Wireless.

"Over the past few years, we've seen an increased demand for the kinds of advanced voice and data services that Cingular will be evaluating in the Atlanta trial," said Cindy Christy, president, Mobility Solutions, Lucent Technologies. "Lucent remains deeply committed to delivering the highest-quality UMTS and HSDPA solutions, and we're excited to be Cingular's vendor of choice as they undertake this trial."

Lucent will supply Cingular Wireless with an end-to-end mobile network based on 3G UMTS technology, including the Merlin(TM) U520 UMTS Wireless PC Modem Cards - jointly developed by Lucent and Novatel Wireless -- which support high-speed data connections on laptops, PDAs and other mobile devices at speeds of up to 384 kilobits per second.

Lucent's UMTS solution can support HSDPA with a software-only upgrade to its existing equipment. Lucent's Bell Labs first demonstrated HSDPA technology at the CTIA Wireless trade show in March 2003 and has played a leading role in the development of the HSDPA standard.
