http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?p...IcI&refer=home LG Electronics Fourth-Quarter Profit Plunges 85% (Update2) By Kevin Cho Jan. 23 (Bloomberg) -- LG Electronics Inc., South Korea's second-largest electronics maker, reported fourth-quarter profit tumbled 85 percent as mounting competition forced the company to cut prices of mobile phones and television screens. Net income fell to 48.2 billion won ($51 million), from 312.2 billion won a year earlier, Seoul-based LG said in a statement today. Sales fell 11 percent to 5.52 trillion won. The results cap a second year of profit declines for LG Electronics, whose shares in 2006 had their first annual drop in four years. Incoming Chief Executive Officer Nam Yong faces increased competition this year from companies including Motorola Inc., which also reported lower profit this month. ``A recovery is not going to be so easy for the company,'' said Kim Hyun Tae, who doesn't own LG shares amid the $500 million he manages at Landmark Investment Management Co. in Seoul. ``The results will have a negative impact on the earnings outlook for other technology companies.'' Shares of LG Electronics dropped 0.9 percent to close at 53,000 won in Seoul after the company reported an unexpected 43.4 billion won operating loss, excluding contributions from subsidiaries, from a profit a year earlier. Net income beat the 46 billion won loss projected by the median estimate of 13 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News, after overseas subsidiaries contributed 100 billion won to earnings. Losses at LG's display division, which includes flat screen TVs, widened to 147 billion won, exceeding the 101 billion won median loss estimate from analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Intensifying Competition Samsung SDI Co., the world's third-largest maker of plasma displays, last week reported its first quarterly loss as competition drove down panel prices. Competition may intensify as Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., the top plasma TV maker, said this month it will invest 280 billion yen ($2.3 billion) to build the world's biggest plasma factory by May 2009. Fourth-quarter shipments of plasma screens fell 36 percent from the previous three months to 580,000 units, LG said. That fell short of estimates by Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. analyst James Kim, who had predicted shipments of 590,000 units. Average prices of plasma TVs fell 21 percent in the fourth quarter from a year earlier, according to estimates by researcher DisplaySearch. Profit from mobile phones, LG's biggest business by revenue, fell 70 percent to 59 billion won, missing analysts' estimates, as handset prices dropped. Sales at the division fell 11 percent to 2.19 trillion won. The division was projected to report 74 billion won of profit on sales of 2.18 trillion won. Mobile Phones Shipments of mobile phones rose to 17 million units from 16.2 million a year earlier, LG said. The company forecast its handset shipments to rise about 20 percent to 78 million units this year, outpacing the 11 percent growth for the industry. Earlier this month, larger rivals Samsung Electronics Co. and Motorola posted handset earnings that missed analysts' estimates amid falling prices and less-than-expected demand. LG's fourth-quarter mobile phone prices fell 19 percent, according to Deutsche Bank AG estimates before earnings were announced. Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications Ltd., the world's fourth-largest mobile-phone maker, said last week fourth-quarter profit tripled as sales of its handsets with high-resolution cameras and Walkman music players surged. Industry leader Nokia Oyj, which reports on Jan. 25, will probably report fourth- quarter profit rose 3.6 percent, according to the average estimate of 10 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. New Chief Executive Chief Executive Nam is counting on demand for liquid-crystal display TVs, the fastest-growing TV market, and mobile phones to stem the company's three consecutive quarters of profit declines. Nam, 58, joined LG Electronics in 1976 and worked as an aide to the current LG Group chairman's father. Until he was ousted by the government in July, his eight-year tenure as head of LG Telecom Ltd. made him the longest-serving chief among Korea's biggest telecommunications companies. Profit from refrigerators and other home appliances rose 23 percent to 62 billion won, compared with a forecast 55 billion won. LG is the world's third-largest appliance maker after Whirlpool Corp. and Electrolux AB. Separately, LG Electronics plans to pay 121.7 billion won in dividends, including 750 won per common share and 800 won per preferred stock, the company said. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?p...8rM&refer=home STMicroelectronics May Say Profit Rose on Mobile-Phone Chips By Chiara Remondini Jan. 23 (Bloomberg) -- STMicroelectronics NV, Europe's largest semiconductor maker, may report an increase in fourth- quarter profit on rising sales of chips used in mobile phones and digital-consumer devices. Net income probably climbed to $210 million from $183 million a year earlier, according to the median estimate of 16 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Sales at the Geneva-based company, whose clients include Nokia Oyj, advanced 7.4 percent to $2.57 billion in the three months ended Dec. 31, the survey showed. ``Sales of mobile phones will continue to be strong, driven by demand for high-end handsets and cheaper models in emerging countries,'' said Raffaella Sommariva, a fund manager at Azimut Sgr in Milan, which oversees $14.9 billion. ``I'm positive on the sector and on STMicro in particular.'' She declined to say if she holds shares in the chipmaker. Global chip sales will increase 10 percent to $273.8 billion this year as demand for consumer electronics and wireless phones keeps rising, the San Jose, California-based Semiconductor Industry Association said in November. Nokia and Motorola Inc., also an STMicroelectronics customer, are introducing new handsets with Web access, music players and cameras to win market share. Motorola said Jan. 19 that sales in 2007 may rise more than analysts estimated, prompting the shares to climb. The U.S. company also said it will eliminate 3,500 jobs to help offset shrinking profit margins. Stock Performance STMicroelectronics is scheduled to report earnings today after the close of trading in New York. Chief Executive Officer Carlo Bozotti, 54, will discuss results tomorrow in Paris. STMicroelectronics spokeswoman Maria Grazia Prestini declined to comment on the earnings before the release. The shares fell 30 cents, or 2.1 percent, to 14.10 euros yesterday in Milan, valuing the company at 12.8 billion euros ($16.6 billion). STMicroelectronics' stock has risen 20 percent in the past six months, beating a 17 percent gain in the 19- member Philadelphia Semiconductor Index. Of 26 analysts covering STMicroelectronics in the past six months, 11 have a ``buy'' rating on the stock and nine advised investors to sell the shares, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The company beat analyst estimates for net income in each of the last four quarters. ``We expect continued market share gains in the digital consumer end market,'' said Jonathan Dutton, an analyst at UBS AG, in a Jan. 18 note to investors. ``We believe this includes relatively strong sales'' of chips for DVD-players and mobile phones with cameras. Sales, Gross Margin Bozotti predicted in October that sales in the fourth quarter will range from $2.49 billion to $2.64 billion, amid a slowdown in global demand for chips and ``some correction in the current semiconductor cycle.'' The gross margin, the percentage of revenue after subtracting manufacturing costs, probably increased to 37 percent in the fourth quarter from 36.5 percent in the year-earlier period, the Bloomberg survey showed. The company in October forecast the margin would be 37 percent, plus or minus one percentage point. STMicroelectronics will probably set a target of 36 percent for the first quarter, the median estimate of 12 analysts showed. ``Excess company inventories and worsening pricing pressure will continue to put pressure on margins for most of 2007 and absorb most of the incremental cost benefits,'' Deutsche Bank analyst Nicolas Gaudois said in a Jan. 15 note. He has a ``hold'' rating on the shares. Plan to Split STMicroelectronics last month announced a plan to split its business into three product areas as the company prepares for a ``strategic repositioning'' of its memory division, which makes NOR flash memory used to store programs in mobile phones. ``We are progressing in our efforts to pursue industry consolidation and financial deconsolidation in flash memory devices,'' Bozotti said. STMicroelectronics is considering several partnerships for the business, the CEO said in October. The move ``to make flash a standalone unit clearly indicates that STMicro is moving closer to a resolution,'' Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. analyst Nav Sheera said. ``A joint venture of some sort is the most likely option in our view.'' Sheera raised his recommendation on the stock to ``overweight'' from ``underweight,'' citing the ``imminent resolution'' in the flash memory business. New Partners STMicroelectronics will pursue joint development of new chip technology with competitors after NXP BV said earlier this month it will leave an alliance with the company at the end of this year. STMicroelectronics is in talks with ``major semiconductor companies'' to continue the so-called Crolles2 alliance as it seeks new partners to replace NXP. The Crolles2 project was started in 2000 to develop so-called CMOS technology that focuses on enhancing the capability of chips used in music players and cellular phones. Freescale Semiconductor Inc., also a partner in the program, said NXP's exit means the alliance will be terminated at the end of 2007 when the initial contract term expires. STMicroelectronics is increasing its presence in Asia to take advantage of cheaper salaries. The company will almost double its workforce in India in the next three years after introducing its first chip designed in the country. STMicroelectronics is also building a factory in China with Hynix Semiconductor Inc. as it shifts production of some memory chips to the region.
