CVS Group plc is a holding company. The principal activities of the Company are to operate animal veterinary practices, veterinary diagnostic businesses, pet crematoria and an online pharmacy and retail business. Its segments are Veterinary Practice, Laboratories, Pet Crematoria and Animed Direct. The Veterinary Practice segment offers treatment for companion animals, equine and farm animals. The Laboratories segment provides diagnostic services to its veterinary practices and third-parties. Shares in Integrated veterinary services company CVS Group Plc (LON:CVSG) (CVSG.L) are 5.3% higher after the release of H1 results to the stock market. CVS reported sales growth of 28.5%, with revenue rising from £100.7 million to £129.4 million. This included a LFL sales increase of 7.2%.
CVS Group’s adjusted EBITDA was 42.4% higher, rising from £14.6 million in H1 2016 to £20.7 million in H1 2017. Adjusted earnings per share was 46.3% higher at 21.5p, while net debt was reduced from £93.1 million in June 2016 to £68 million. Operating profit was 75.3% higher at £9.5 million, while profit before income tax increased 86.4% to £8 million.

The company raised £29.6 million after expenses through an equity placing in December 2016. It has acquired 13 practice surgeries during the period, as well as a further 20 after the end of the period.

In the last year, the CVS Group share price has risen 40%. That’s a better performance than the share prices of other healthcare stocks such as GlaxoSmithKline plc (LON:GSK) (GSK.L), AstraZeneca plc (LON:AZN) (AZN.L), Shire PLC (LON:SHP) (SHP.L) and Smith & Nephew plc (LON:SN) (SN.L). The GlaxoSmithKline share price is 18% up, AstraZeneca’s shares are 26% higher, Shire is up 19% and Smith & Nephew has gained 5%.

In my opinion, CVS Group seems to be making good progress. I think its acquisition strategy could help it to grow. I believe there is growth potential within the wider healthcare industry, and specifically within the animal care space. I’d rather own GlaxoSmithKline or AstraZeneca due to their diversity, while I think Shire could perform well if it makes a success of the integration with Baxalta. Smith & Nephew offers some stability on a relative basis in my view.

However, I feel CVS Group could continue to perform well on a relative basis, and I feel it has investment appeal.
