Qantas grounds all flights

Qantas, the Australian flag-carrier has taken the extraordinary step of grounding all its aircraft, in a dramatic escalation of a bitter dispute with trade unions over pay and a proposed restructuring of the airline.

Qantas said on Saturday it was immediately suspending domestic and international flights following a series of strikes at the airline. From Monday the airline will lock out workers belonging to three unions after industrial action that had forced the cancellation of 600 flights and affected 70,000 passengers. Qantas said grounding the fleet would cost A$20m ($21.4m/£13.3m) per day

Unions objected to how Qantas wanted to locate more of its operations outside Australia, but Alan Joyce, chief executive, said the plans were necessary to address large losses at Qantas International, the group’s international arm.

“They are trashing our strategy and our brand,” he said. “They are deliberately destabilising the company. Customers are now fleeing from us.”
Mr Joyce added that if the strikes continued, he would have no choice but to close down Qantas “part by part”.
