THE last time Belgium held a general election, in 2007, it took 282 days to form a fully fledged coalition government. The country is now being called to fresh elections on June 13th. Forming the next coalition may well be harder.

Among the Dutch-speakers of Flanders in the country’s north, the polls are topped by Bart De Wever, a populist bruiser who describes French-speakers in the south as “dependents” addicted to transfers from the thrifty Flemish. He wants to split the tax system in two, as well as the welfare state and most other public spending. The king and the country called Belgium can stay, for the time being, but Flanders’s “natural evolution”, says Mr De Wever, is to become an independent state.

In a final flourish, he is calling for price controls on 200 staples, such as bread and milk. Somehow, a coalition must be formed with the consent of these two men

Consider Mr De Wever’s sloganeering. He does not just sound off about transfers of billions of euros from Flanders. He also charges that tax inspectors are less zealous in the south of the country. He grumbles that the motorways of Flanders are lined with radar traps, whereas Wallonia’s are camera-free. The Flemish regional budget minister, a party colleague, complains that frugal Flanders plans to run a surplus by 2011, whereas the French-speaking rulers in Brussels and Wallonia plan to let their deficits run for another five years. A health spokesman for the N-VA, Mr De Wever’s party, talks of profiteering, bill-padding and “francophone abuses” in southern hospitals.

Io abito nel primo comune del SUd Belga, la Wallonia... La mia zona e' quella piu' ricca di tutta la nazione e qui ci abitano i calciatori. In 5 km puoi contare 4 radar.....

E poi, 50 anni fa' quando c'erano le miniere il flusso dei sussidi era l'inverso. Il Sud con il carbone manteneva il nord povero. E' mai successo in Italia che il meridione abbia finanziato il nord, storicamente parlando?

Scuba come mai il belgio ha queste grandi differenze nord sud? il territorio e' piccolo, perché non sono "compatti" ? non e' che il nord e' economicamente "drogato" stile UK/USA?
e poi quelli nel nord come sono visti dagli olandesi? per esempio quelli di bolzano non vogliono essere italiani (parlano tedesco) ma gli austriaci non li vogliono

Stessa cosa, i Fiamminghi non si sentono Olandesi cosi' come i Walloni detestano i Francesi....


Guarda, la storia linguistica inBelgio dura di piu' di quella del conflitto di interessi in Italia... Prima di partire per gli USA avevano il problema del sindaco di un paesino nei Fouron che si rifiutava di parlare Fiammingo. Quattro anni dopo, tornando in Belgio, appena accesa la TV, stavano ancora parlando dei Fouron

Il problema del Sud si e' avuto con la chiusura delle miniere di carbone. Prima erano loro che sostenevano i contadini fiamminghi. Poi il nord si e' industrializzato col porto di Anversa mentre il sud e' andato in crisi

Nel sud italia è stato il consolidarsi del latifondo e il permanere di un sistema semifeudale con tutte le eccezioni a determinare le differenze, ma è stato un processo lento.

Comunque il Belgio è l'ultimo dei Pesi con i quali confrontarsi; è un "nazione" finta, solo sulla carta.
