Soul Music non è soltanto la fortunata definizione di un genere musicale anni '60, ma un diverso modo di intendere la canzone e la comunicazione col pubblico da parte degli artisti neri.
Soul, che letteralmente significa anima, è un termine che venne impiegato a partire dagli anni '60, per riferirsi a quella parte della musica nera che si esprimeva con modalità stilistiche derivanti essenzialmente dal gospel.

Caratterizzato da un'intensità emotiva e da una drammaticità nell'interpretazione, il soul raggiunse il massimo dello splendore negli anni '60, dopo che, nel decennio precedente, ne avevano gettato le basi grandi maestri della musica nera, come Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, ma soprattutto Otis Redding, Etta James, Solomon Burke, Aretha Franklin, Barry White ed Isaac Hayes.

Negli anni '70, la fusione con la disco music fece nascere nuove forme musicali che ne rappresentavano un surrogato.

DUFFY - Voce particolare, nasale, nera e parecchio soul. Tant’è che qualcuno - prontamente zittito - l’ha accostata a Amy Winehouse. E anche la musica ricalca quelle sonorità anni sessanta che stanno proiettando il soul di stampo anni sessanta al vertice delle classifiche. Duffy è l’astro nascente del panorama musicale internazionale.
